Alasdair Hill shows how to break the data storage dilemma over breakfast and a round of golf!

Representatives from a variety of companies attended the RISC Group Storage Breakfast Briefing last week at the prestigious Park Hotel in Wick near Bath. The briefing was hosted by industry expert Alasdair Hill, a well known figure in the data storage industry.

The briefing was organised to help IT managers with systems that are being tasked to cope with growing amounts of data. Increasingly business and IT professionals are left with a difficult choice; to add storage capacity to their systems by purchasing more servers or to instigate draconian office procedures. Servers require power, cooling, networking, maintaining and managing which sets up a vicious cost cycle when capacity is again reached and a new server is purchased requiring more power, more cooling etc.

Last week’s breakfast briefing hosted by RISC Group, the IT Managed Services experts recommended ways that business can overcome this dilemma. Attendees gained a better understanding of how technology and best practices could help them to:

  • Reduce management overhead and increase storage utilisation

  • Increase application performance, whilst reducing hardware costs

  • Better protect applications and data

  • Cut through the minefield of iSCSI verses Fibre Channel and NAS verses SAN

  • Better serve your users and reduce system outages

  • Protect against the unforeseen

After a wonderful breakfast guests were invited to play golf on the hotel’s well known course and the weather managed to stay dry.

'We had a very positive response to the briefing' said Alasdair, 'This is an issue that effects all in IT. With the spiralling cost of energy we all need to ensure that we make best use of the hardware that we have, RISC Group has designed ways of making the best use of existing systems where possible.'

John Auletta Head of Technology Services, South East Development Agency said '…An excellent day, it was very well organised and promoted some interesting debate. I look forward to meeting with you all again some time in the future.'

'Briefing was well presented to a level that suited the whole audience in pleasant surroundings.' Neville Grigg, Lloyds TSB
